What very notably distinguishes Asparn’s open air museum of prehistory, ancient history and mediaeval archaeology, is, aside from it’s long range of examined historic periods where other museums specialize in a narrower timeframe, mainly the vast area it inhabits and atmospheric vegetation that encloses it.
Both from the inside of the archeologically recreated buildings, as well as outside around them and high above the area we were tasked to capture inviting footage and produce a sort of video-tour for all the soon-to-be first-time visitors of the archeological park.
The footage however would not have been possible for us to plan, edit, grade and thematically underline it with a fitting score without our partner legally operating, owning and being responsible for the camera-drone, with whom we are already eager to collaborate again in the future to provide our clients with as wide a variety of traditional-film making, meaning in-camera shot and not fully computer generated image based, as possible.
The message is arguably simple: Create a sustainable future for coming generations, non-dependent on fossil fuels or producing radioactive waste. That is what VOLKSKRAFTWERK aims to achieve, by creating awareness in lectures, advancing technological development, by synergizing scientists, distributing generators and environmentally friendly batteries for self-sustaining households and building a clean energy power plant for regional supply.
How to convey all that in a short image video however was an entirely different challenge.
Narrated by Otto Clemens, famous for lending his voice to documentaries of the Universum series, we set out to purely bring the emotional aspect’s message of VOLKSKRAFTWERK to the general public’s awareness. Why we are all dependent on our daily use of energy, be it electric or propulsive, why our reliance of limited resources needs to change and what might happen if we don’t prepare in time. Guiding us representatively for his company through the video, Michael Ecker acts as both a presenter of circumstances and problems, as a worried observer and a metaphorical light bringer in the end, when it comes to developing with alternatives.
In choosing testimonials to operate in every day situations with electric energy as well as locations we consciously opted for people closely affiliated to the VOLKSKRAFTWERK company’s cause and prominent local sites, the Danube river shore, train station and tramway, the Pöstlingberg, winter harbor, Ars Electronica Center, the Johannes Kepler University, the highway next to the Vöst industrial area, farming fields and cosy interior sites in and in close proximity around Linz itself, where the company’s seat is located and where it will set a large proportion of it’s upcoming events and lectures, thus evoking a similar and personally applicable context in it’s target audience.
Together with the emotionally charged mixture of a classical and electronic score, the subtle sound effects and the electricity black-out animation all fitted into a common theme by our softening and assimilating color correction palette, we aimed to recreate a certain style you might be familiar from documentaries on environmental issues as well as political or charitable plights for change and support, without too much using fear and a looming doom to scare audiences into paying attention.
Wine, roasted boar, honey pies, laughter, music, juggling, show fights and a huge bonfire. What more could warm every Schwarzenbach and surrounding area’s citizens’ hearts than the annual cheerful celtic-themed midsummer-night’s fair „Celtovation“ in southeastern Lower Austria.
In the three days we’ve been there not only did the organizers gather a host of 40+ armoured and armed celtic warriors from all over Europe, firebreathing stiled jugglers, a petting zoo of all the beasts our countrymen from 2000 years ago could have known and more crafting and cooking activities any child could finish in a single day, but also a pire of wood, or rather entire trees, that would burn for hours and stretch high into the sky for many miles to see. Needless to say anyone present now can’t wait for next year’s solstice celebrations and the celtovation festival to finally come by again.
Thomas Dickbauer, the sawmill’s manager, never shies away from inviting new thought provoking and varied guests and artists and we’ve been lucky enough to be booked for the event not for the first time and therefore grow more and more familiar with the location, crew and atmosphere to get the most out of the scenic setup and light situation.
Drawing thousands of tourists and visitors, families and hobby historians, the grounds offer a convincing and awe inspiring glance into a high class roman citizen’s daily life unlike any other facility or museum, offering colorful mosaics, warm water baths, high halls of marble and even the typical roman toilets. Obviously our short promotional video could not grasp all aspects a personal visit ever could but hopefully it evokes in you what it was meant to in a general public: arouse curiosity and tempt to see it all oneself.
